The Wisdom of the 4 of Cups

The Wisdom of the 4 of Cups

During Tarot readings, sometimes a card will come up multiple times for multiple clients. In the past 2 weeks, the card that has come up the most is the 4 of cups. When we get stalker cards like this, I’ve found that there is usually a message for the collective waiting to be revealed. Let’s explore the wisdom of the 4 of Cups.

The traditional Rider-Waite card shows a man sitting under a tree, arms crossed, with 3 cups on the ground around him. Another cup is being offered by a floating hand, but the man is focused solely on himself. The Spiral Tarot shows much the same, while the Wild Unknown shows a rat sitting on top of 4 chalices. His belly guards them closely, and he seems unwilling to move.

The messages from this symbolism are many, and as with every message, subject to your own personal interpretation. Fours generally mean stability - 4 pillars in a foundation. And this 4 points towards evaluation of your foundation. Selfishness is another message- but this is the kind of selfishness that if directed properly can lead to great inner wisdom. It can indicate a blah feeling, boredom with what you are surrounded by. The cups signal opportunities, but you’re ignoring them, and often for good reason. The selfish energy can be a indication that it is time to look inward for validation and alignment. You can ask “Is this what I really want right now?” “What needs to change for true happiness?”
The caveat here is that to much inner focus can lead to paralysis, and feelings of “oh, woe is me.” If this is the case for you, you’re being called to look up and recognize the opportunities surrounding you.
